Cosmetic Surgery – How Far is Too Far?

For some, self improvement can become an obsession and this can be due to bullying in childhood years or perhaps as a result of psychological disorder.

Whatever the reason, the results can be startling to say the least. Theoretically and certainly ethically, any cosmetic surgeon worth their salt should refuse to give treatment to anyone who is clearly taking things too far.

There are many examples of people going that little bit too far, mostly behind closed doors but in a few cases very publicly. The worrying thing is, it might not just be your self esteem that's damaged and you could be putting your health at risk too.

Take the recent case of a woman from Korea whose obsession with looking good led her to inject cooking oil into her face in the hope that she would beautify her appearance further. The result was that unfortunately her face was left disfigured beyond recognition.

Over a 20 year period the woman had operation after operation meaning that eventually her face was left disfigured but she would still see herself as beautiful. Eventually the more ethical of the surgeons she visited refused to carry out further procedures.

She was then able to find a clinic who supplied her with medical grade silicon and a syringe which she used to carry on filling her face at home. This type of procedure should be carried out carefully and is not suitable for every area of the face ' allowing a client to take this type of filler home and inject it themselves is astonishing and most certainly gross misconduct.

When this eventually ran out she turned to the next best thing ' cooking oil ' and this caused such a reaction that her face was unrecognisable by her own parents. Injecting any substance into your face is risky and even approved fillers may not be suitable for everyone. For these fillers a compatibility test should be undertaken and the procedure should not be carried out on the same day.

There was a happy ending of sorts in that due to the publicity of the case, donations were received which allowed for corrective surgery. Unfortunately due to the extent of the damage the woman's face is still largely unrecognisable.

The moral of the story it seems is to think any procedure through carefully before you go ahead with it to ensure you will be happy with the results. If you use a reputable surgeon you will be taken through a consultation process to ensure that you are making the decision with a sound mind and that you are in fit health in order to be able to receive it.

If you are considering cosmetic surgery procedures in the UK such as breast augmentation you should seek an accredited surgeon who is registered with BAPRAS or BAAPS to ensure this plastic surgery runs smoothly.
